SACRAMENTO, Calif. — January 11, 2010 — President Barack Obama recently proclaimed January 2011 as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.

“I call upon the people of the United States to recognize the vital role we can play in ending modern slavery and to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities,” the President said in a statement.

Local volunteers for California Against Slavery will gather at the State Capitol on Tuesday, January 11, 2011, to raise awareness about human trafficking by handing out awareness ribbons and literature to the public and political officials. The group will also visit the offices of legislators to push for stronger laws against human trafficking in California.

California Against Slavery is a non-profit, non-partisan human rights organization working to pass an initiative on the 2012 California ballot to strengthen current human trafficking laws and increase victims’ rights.

Human trafficking is a criminal business that profits from enslaving people for sexual servitude and forced labor.

“This crime is flourishing in California because the law is weak,” said Rosario Dowling, Sacramento regional director for California Against Slavery. “We need to speak up and take action for the victims of human trafficking.”
