SUMMARY:Hope 365 Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Global Hope 365 advocates for gender equality and to end violent practices towards women\, namely human trafficking and child marriage. At the “Speaker’s Corner: Shining a Light on Human Trafficking Prevention event” on February 7th\, Global Hope 365 brings together a unique blend of experts on the topic. We will here from local officials who work on the topic on a regular basis as well as a current law student. \nOpening Remarks: Laura Oatman\, District Director for Congressman Harley Rouda\, who represents coastal Orange County from Seal Beach to Laguna Niguel. \nFeatured perspective: Peggy Huang\, City of Yorba Linda Councilmember\, Deputy Attorney General in the Office of the Attorney General\, Criminal Appeals\, Trial\, and Writs section\, Candidate for US Congress. As a trial attorney\, Peggy prosecuted individuals who abused and neglected clients in facilities licensed by the California Department of Social Services and represented foster children in juvenile court. She was involved in two bills\, signed into law\, that protected abused and neglected children. Peggy offers a unique perspective on the challenges of ending Human Trafficking in Orange County and California. \nFeatured perspective Christina Mojica is a third-year law student at Chapman University Dale E. Fowler School of Law. She interned at Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) in Malta for 3 months this year. JRS is an international NGO with a mission to advocate on behalf of refugees and other forcibly displaced persons throughout the world. The JRS Malta team specializes in legal assistance\, social services\, awareness-raising in schools and spiritual care. Assistance is provided regardless of race\, ethnic origin\, or religious belief. Christina assisted the lead attorney at JRS Malta with providing legal advice to newly arrived asylum seekers in Malta and wrote appeals for people who were rejected refugee status in Malta. Christina will be talking about the life-changing experiences she went through while working there including stories of human trafficking.
