SUMMARY:California's Forgotten Children Documentary at UCLA
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Human Trafficking Awareness Month to view award-winning documentary about child sex trafficking in California and a Q and A discussion with leaders in the movement and the director of the film. \nCalifornia’s Forgotten Children is a feature documentary about child sex trafficking. The film recounts true stories of girls and boys who were commercially sexually exploited in California and are now survivors and courageous leaders fighting for the rights of victims worldwide. \nThis film gives viewers the tools to combat this epidemic and empowers survivors on their path to freedom. \n\n\nHosted by LA Stop The Traffik\, a student-run\, non-profit\, Active Communities Against Trafficking (ACT) group at UCLA\, which advocates for an increase in community awareness on the exploitation involved in human-trafficking. \nWe aim to organize events throughout the year to stimulate awareness and understanding about the issue\, as well as to engage others to take a stand against such breaches in human rights. Working together with other student groups\, non-profit organizations and businesses\, we work to raise funds and volunteer for organizations that provide support for victims of trafficking: organizations that directly engage in rescuing victims from the trafficking trade or that help victims to recover and re-establish themselves in the community within a safe environment. \n\n\nAfter the film there will be a Q and A discussion with Rachel Thomas\, M. Ed who shares her powerful story in the documentary. Rachel is the Co-Founder of Sowers Education Group where she and a team of educators promote sex trafficking awareness and survivor empowerment. A graduate of UCLA with a Masters in Education\, Rachel co-authored Ending The Game: An Intervention Curriculum for Survivors of Sex Trafficking. This curriculum has helped hundreds of survivors understand and overcome psychological coercion. \n\n\nDirector of the film Melody C. Miller graduated from the UCLA School of Theater\, Film\, and Television and has won various film awards nationwide including The Motion Picture Association of America Award and Women in Film Award. While volunteering for a local non-profit Melody found out that students in her high school were being trafficked and decided to dedicate her skills in the arts to make a difference for 10 more years. Using her skills in filmmaking she embarked on a mission to raise awareness and give communities the tools and the knowledge to combat this scourge. Before graduating from UCLA\, she brought together 100 influential Bruin artists and 20 organizations to join her in the fight to end trafficking by making California’s Forgotten Children. After years of hard work\, she completed the film and Melody continues to work on spreading its message every day. \n\n\nFueled by powerful stories and a desire to foster change alongside our partners across the globe\, California’s Forgotten Children has become a movement. The film have reached thousands of people internationally raising awareness about the prevalence of child sex trafficking through festival and community screenings; mobilizing change within communities by partnering with local advocates and survivor leaders\, and inspiring education reform that advocates for bringing an end to the exploitation of children. \nIn June 2019\, the film screened at the United States Senate encouraging policymakers in creating and implementing laws and policies to combat trafficking. The film won Best Documentary at the Soho International Film Festival and has been changing lives at numerous notable film festivals around the world. The film screened at the United State of Women Summit\, the same event where Michelle Obama was a guest speaker. It is now making the rounds in law enforcement organizations\, tech companies\, non-profits\, and educational institutions across the globe to prevent these injustices from continuing. \n\nPlease join us for this important event and conversation.\n\nThank you

SUMMARY:The Financial Empowerment Academy
DESCRIPTION:Free to Thrive and Self Help Credit Union are pleased to announce the launch of The Financial Empowerment\nAcademy for survivors of human trafficking and domestic violence.  This multi session\, interactive learning experience will develop fiscal understanding and empower survivors to secure their financial future. \nThis free event is hosted by the Financial Empowerment Academy at The Well Community for Women on February 1st\, from 10:00 AM to 12:00PM. This program for survivors of human trafficking and domestic violence is a first of its kind; it aims to give participants the skills\, tools and support to become financially empowered and independent.  Rather than sitting through a lecture on how to create and live through a budget\, participants will use the Bite of Reality phone App that can be easily downloaded to smart phones or tablets.       \n All participants are assigned an identity; financial occupation\, salary\, spouse and family\, student loan debt\, credit card debt\, and medical insurance payments.   Then the participants will walk around to various table-top stations where they will need to make decisions on what type of housing\, transportation\, food\, clothing\, household necessities\, day care\, fun stuff and other needs.  Fortunately\, the game also includes a “credit Union” table-top station to help with their financial needs.   There’s even a “Fickle Finger of Fate” that will give participants unexpected “expenses” or “windfalls” – just like in real life. It’s Fun\, Safe and Interactive! \nSpace is limited but we need your help to spread the word. This is open to all survivors and if you are a service provider you are also welcome to attend to learn more about the program. Please feel free to share the invite with others you think might be interested. The Well Community for Women will also be providing FREE childcare. We look forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Human Trafficking & The Dangers of Technology

Come learn how to stop this crime in your community!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccording to the National Human Trafficking Hotline California has the highest number of reported human trafficking cases in the United States. With technology being used as a deceptive gateway for exploiters to recruit\, sell and groom children\, the time for us to combat human trafficking is now. PROTECT™ was developed by a coalition of three anti-trafficking nonprofits in partnership with the California Department of Education and the California Attorney General’s Office. \nHuman Trafficking & The Dangers of Technology is now available to school communities of parents\, guardians\, and other community members. In this session participants will accomplish these three learning objectives – Education\, Awareness\, and Prevention. It will provide the information and resources necessary to educate you on human trafficking and the dangers of technology. \nWhat’s our objective? To increase knowledge of human trafficking\, including labor and sex trafficking\, enhance understanding of trafficking recruitment tactics and the role of technology and increase protective factors for youth and young adults throughout our communities. \n

SUMMARY:House Farm Workers! Task Force Meeting
DESCRIPTION:What would it take to produce a comprehensive study of farm workers and their housing needs in Ventura County? Learn more at this meeting!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe most recent attempt to collect data on the makeup of Ventura County’s farm worker households\, and to quantify farm worker housing needs\, was published in 2001. It was prepared under the auspices of the Ventura County Resource Management Agency’s Planning Division. \nMuch has changed in the housing market\, agricultural labor force and county economy in the past 19 years. Yet the disconnect between farm worker income and local housing prices remains as profound as ever. \nWhat would it take to produce a comprehensive study of farm workers and their housing needs in Ventura County\, coupled with a detailed stakeholder-driven strategy to wield the study’s findings as a catalyst for specific policy changes and as a tool for public education? \nIn 2018\, a farm worker housing study was funded and published by a collaboration of County and City governments\, affordable housing developers\, and nonprofit organizations in the Salinas and Pajaro Valleys. The report also included a comprehensive Action Plan that is currently being implemented across jurisdictions and yielding great results. \nJoin us on Friday\, February 28 to hear from Jennifer Coile\, the program manager that lead the Farm Worker Housing Study and Action Plan in Salinas Valley and Pajaro Valley. We will hear about what steps were taken to initiate this study\, who was involved\, how it was financed\, and the research methodology and process. We will also hear about their Action Plan implementation and what progress has been made on the objectives across jurisdictions and counties. \nAgenda \n8:30 am -9:00 am Check in and Networking \n9:00 am -10:30 am Program
