DESCRIPTION:Free to Thrive and Self Help Credit Union are pleased to announce the launch of The Financial Empowerment\nAcademy for survivors of human trafficking and domestic violence.  This multi session\, interactive learning experience will develop fiscal understanding and empower survivors to secure their financial future. \nThis free event is hosted by the Financial Empowerment Academy at The Well Community for Women on February 1st\, from 10:00 AM to 12:00PM. This program for survivors of human trafficking and domestic violence is a first of its kind; it aims to give participants the skills\, tools and support to become financially empowered and independent.  Rather than sitting through a lecture on how to create and live through a budget\, participants will use the Bite of Reality phone App that can be easily downloaded to smart phones or tablets.       \n All participants are assigned an identity; financial occupation\, salary\, spouse and family\, student loan debt\, credit card debt\, and medical insurance payments.   Then the participants will walk around to various table-top stations where they will need to make decisions on what type of housing\, transportation\, food\, clothing\, household necessities\, day care\, fun stuff and other needs.  Fortunately\, the game also includes a “credit Union” table-top station to help with their financial needs.   There’s even a “Fickle Finger of Fate” that will give participants unexpected “expenses” or “windfalls” – just like in real life. It’s Fun\, Safe and Interactive! \nSpace is limited but we need your help to spread the word. This is open to all survivors and if you are a service provider you are also welcome to attend to learn more about the program. Please feel free to share the invite with others you think might be interested. The Well Community for Women will also be providing FREE childcare. We look forward to seeing you there!

PROTECT™ is a leading human trafficking prevention education and training program. PROTECT™ was developed by a coalition of three anti-trafficking nonprofits in partnership with the California Department of Education and the California Attorney General’s Office. \nHuman Trafficking & The Dangers of Technology is now available to school communities of parents\, guardians\, and other community members. In this session participants will accomplish these three learning objectives – Education\, Awareness\, and Prevention. It will provide the information and resources necessary to educate you on human trafficking and the dangers of technology. \nWhat’s our objective? We will here from local officials who work on the topic on a regular basis as well as a current law student. \nOpening Remarks: Laura Oatman\, District Director for Congressman Harley Rouda\, who represents coastal Orange County from Seal Beach to Laguna Niguel. \nFeatured perspective: Peggy Huang\, City of Yorba Linda Councilmember\, Deputy Attorney General in the Office of the Attorney General\, Criminal Appeals\, Trial\, and Writs section\, Candidate for US Congress. As a trial attorney\, Peggy prosecuted individuals who abused and neglected clients in facilities licensed by the California Department of Social Services and represented foster children in juvenile court. She was involved in two bills\, signed into law\, that protected abused and neglected children. Peggy offers a unique perspective on the challenges of ending Human Trafficking in Orange County and California. \nFeatured perspective Christina Mojica is a third-year law student at Chapman University Dale E. Fowler School of Law. She interned at Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) in Malta for 3 months this year. JRS is an international NGO with a mission to advocate on behalf of refugees and other forcibly displaced persons throughout the world. The JRS Malta team specializes in legal assistance\, social services\, awareness-raising in schools and spiritual care. Assistance is provided regardless of race\, ethnic origin\, or religious belief. Christina assisted the lead attorney at JRS Malta with providing legal advice to newly arrived asylum seekers in Malta and wrote appeals for people who were rejected refugee status in Malta. Christina will be talking about the life-changing experiences she went through while working there including stories of human trafficking.

DESCRIPTION:C4DP is pleased to offer this training to parents and concerned adults to deeper the understanding about sexual ethics and consent.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn a time where the national conversation is dominated by stories about sexual harassment and sexual assault\, it’s critical for parents and educators to be preemptive and proactive with their kids\, which means starting–and continuing–conversations about sexual ethics with both children and teens. \nJoin Sexual Literacy and Consent Educator\, Natasha Singh (www.sexlited.com)\, for an evening packed with information and strategies about how to talk to kids about sex and sexual ethics and why it’s important to start sooner than later. \nIn this 2 hour workshop\, you will learn: \n– The most common myths that prevent parents from talking to their kids about sex \n– Why teaching sexual ethics matters even if you think your child isn’t ready \n– What to do if your child is intentionally or unintentionally exposed to porn \n– Strategies for talking to kids about resilience\, consent\, sexting\, gender\, and media consumption \n– Strategies for moving past your own discomfort when talking about sex \n– That you’re more capable of having these conversations than you think! \nNatasha will share invaluable frameworks\, tools\, and language that parents can use at home. \nThis workshop is perfect for any parents of young children and adolescents\, as well as new and upcoming parents wishing to gain more knowledge in the areas of taking to kids about sex. \n\n\n\nAbout Natasha Singh: \nNatasha Singh is a sexual literacy educator who speaks widely on sexual ethics\, gender role training\, and ending gender-based violence. She also works as an educational consultant to schools\, parents\, and students to address topics including: sexual assault prevention\, consent education\, porn literacy\, toxic/mindful masculinity\, healthy relationships\, and sexual literacy. \nNatasha Co-Chairs the Board of Center for Domestic Peace\, a Marin-based nonprofit whose mission is to mobilize individuals and communities to end domestic violence\, and she serves on the Board of Freedom Fwd\, a San Francisco-based organization focused on ending child sexual exploitation in the Bay Area. \nNatasha is also Co Founder of Asha Rising\, a nonprofit that provides permanent housing for elderly women who have exited the sex trade. \nNatasha’s writing has appeared in publications including the The Atlantic\, the New York Times\, Threepenny Review\, Crab Orchard Review\, South Asian Review\, Proximity\, Good Girls Marry Doctors: South Asian American Daughters on Obedience and Rebellion\, and several other anthologies

SUMMARY:House Farm Workers! Task Force Meeting
DESCRIPTION:What would it take to produce a comprehensive study of farm workers and their housing needs in Ventura County? Learn more at this meeting!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe most recent attempt to collect data on the makeup of Ventura County’s farm worker households\, and to quantify farm worker housing needs\, was published in 2001. It was prepared under the auspices of the Ventura County Resource Management Agency’s Planning Division. \nMuch has changed in the housing market\, agricultural labor force and county economy in the past 19 years. Yet the disconnect between farm worker income and local housing prices remains as profound as ever. \nWhat would it take to produce a comprehensive study of farm workers and their housing needs in Ventura County\, coupled with a detailed stakeholder-driven strategy to wield the study’s findings as a catalyst for specific policy changes and as a tool for public education? \nIn 2018\, a farm worker housing study was funded and published by a collaboration of County and City governments\, affordable housing developers\, and nonprofit organizations in the Salinas and Pajaro Valleys. The report also included a comprehensive Action Plan that is currently being implemented across jurisdictions and yielding great results. \nJoin us on Friday\, February 28 to hear from Jennifer Coile\, the program manager that lead the Farm Worker Housing Study and Action Plan in Salinas Valley and Pajaro Valley. We will hear about what steps were taken to initiate this study\, who was involved\, how it was financed\, and the research methodology and process.
