SUMMARY:Now & Next Online Speakers Series
DESCRIPTION:Privilege and Racial Marginalization: The racism of prostitution\nPresented by Vednita Carter (Breaking Free)\, Sonia Ossorio (National Organization for Women New York)\, Christine Stark (Author)\nWe know that chattel slavery in the US was built on a foundation of sexual violence in a myriad of forms. The land theft\, resources appropriation and genocide of Indigenous peoples was also characterized by sexual violence. The same can be said of the colonization of Latin America. This history explains today’s over-representation of women and children of color in the sex industry. \nIn “Privilege and Racial Marginalization: The racism of prostitution\,” Vednita Carter\, founder of Breaking Free\, and Christine Stark\, professor and co-author of “Garden of Truth: The Prostitution and Trafficking of Native Women in Minnesota\,” will discuss socially constructed racial inequality and marginalization as a defining element of the prostitution of women and children\, in a conversation moderated by Sonia Ossorio\, President of National Organization of Women – NYC. They will also discuss the role of male privilege and pornography in driving the demand for prostituted sex. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Community Q&A: Survivors Surviving COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:When your world is turned upside down\, again: How survivors are being impacted by the lockdown and what resources are available\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us to hear from Monique Ana founder of San Diego-based Victory Garden Sanctuary\, a network of survivors providing support and resources for those struggling beyond the life of exploitation. \nIt may seem that once individuals have moved on from the life that all would be better. Hear from survivors* about the unique challenges and enduring traumas and what do they really need. \n*In the context of care and identifying appropriate needs and resources\, a survivor is considered an individual not currently engaged in the life of trafficking and a victim is someone currently caught up in or in the acute steps of exiting the life.
