Privilege and Racial Marginalization: The racism of prostitution

Presented by Vednita Carter (Breaking Free)Sonia Ossorio (National Organization for Women New York)Christine Stark (Author)

We know that chattel slavery in the US was built on a foundation of sexual violence in a myriad of forms. The land theft, resources appropriation and genocide of Indigenous peoples was also characterized by sexual violence. The same can be said of the colonization of Latin America. This history explains today’s over-representation of women and children of color in the sex industry.

In “Privilege and Racial Marginalization: The racism of prostitution,” Vednita Carter, founder of Breaking Free, and Christine Stark, professor and co-author of “Garden of Truth: The Prostitution and Trafficking of Native Women in Minnesota,” will discuss socially constructed racial inequality and marginalization as a defining element of the prostitution of women and children, in a conversation moderated by Sonia Ossorio, President of National Organization of Women – NYC. They will also discuss the role of male privilege and pornography in driving the demand for prostituted sex.
